The September Issue: Fall Fashion
Fall fashion is arguably the most creative of all the seasons. As the weather cools down in the northern hemisphere, this means sweater season, layering, coats and boots. It’s a personal favorite — there is so much room for personal style and expression.
Fall symbolizes the harvest, abundance, and ripeness. After the peak of summer and its vitality, fall teaches us that nothing lasts forever. In the fall, we get to shed our skin and return to what matters.Â
If you pick up any September issue from the newsstands you’ll see the latest fall fashion trends, featuring designer brands. These looks are often modeled by unrealistically thin Photoshopped bodies.
The underlying message? If you buy these expensive clothes, then you’ll be enough: thin enough, stylish enough, popular enough, desirable enough.
Rarely do we pick up a magazine and feel better about ourselves. And yet, rarely can we avoid the allure of the glossy pages. Who doesn’t fall under the spell from time to time?
Fact: The fashion industry profits off your insecurities.
If the term retail therapy is any clue, it works. We shop, instead of feeling our feelings.
You do not have to purchase a new wardrobe to feel good about yourself.
Here’s how I learned this lesson: I used to be the Lead Stylist for a publicly traded fashion company in Seattle. Every day I felt pressure to show up and wear something fashionable and aspirational. Somehow I owed it to people.
I loved the job title and the people I worked with, but things felt out of alignment somehow. I had dreams of quitting my job and being a full-time entrepreneur instead. I had a gut feeling that this wasn’t the right path for me.
During this season, my clothing shopping was at an all time high. Sure I looked good, but my internal experience didn’t match. I desperately wanted to feel as good as I looked.
Immediately after leaving that job at the end of 2018, I curbed my clothing spending. I had great pieces. I didn’t need new clothes to feel good. I got creative with what I had.
I learned that the process is the inspiration.
The most sustainable fashion solution is to get the most wear from your present wardrobe.
Except people only wear 20% of the clothes they own. A closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.
What if you could see your clothes from a new lens?
