What Does Style Have to do With Embodiment?
Have you ever showed up to an event and realized you were underdressed? Or overdressed?
Been at a costume party in a half hearted effort when everyone was dressed to the nines?
Attended a dinet en blanc (dinner in white) wearing something other than white or ivory?
The discomfort of being in misalignment in your wardrobe can be enough to take you out of the moment — out of your body and into your head.
But when you get it right, when you wear something that makes you look and feel unstoppable, then you can forget about your clothes. You can be fully present, more yourself. This psychic space will help you be a better friend, partner, or parent.
How do we treat people and things that we care about? We care for them. We tend to the people and pets we love: feeding them, touching them, loving them. Same for inanimate objects. We landscape the lawn. We wash the car. We polish grandma’s silver.
My mentor Judith Rasband has said a thousand times, ”The way we dress impacts the way we think, the way we feel, the way we act, and the way that others react to us.” So much emphasis is always put on the first impression, how people are going to respond to you — but it starts so much earlier than that.
It starts with you. Do you feel good? Do you feel capable? Do you feel inspired? Your style can support you with this.
The way we adorn ourselves matters. It’s nothing short of a political act — the women in Iran are being persecuted and even losing their lives for stepping out of line and refusing to cover their heads. A woman I know was arrested by the morality police when she lived in Iran for showing a little too much of her shin.
Is your hair visible? How much skin are you showing? These are choices that people should be able to make on their own without a government becoming involved.
Tantra teaches us that any everyday act, when given proper attention and consciousness, can become a ritual.
May adorning yourself become a ritual. May you ask yourself, ”How do I want to feel today?” and then adorn yourself accordingly.
On Monday, October 10th, I will be leading a virtual masterclass called Anatomy of an Outfit. I went to the photo studio with my team to shoot a fall look book of 25 outfits that you can recreate. Tickets are $44 and will include a recording of the masterclass in case you can’t join live. We’ll wrap up class with a personalized Q&A session with me, your personal stylist. I hope you’ll join us!
This video will give you a glimpse of some of the outfits that we’ll break down in the masterclass.
