"Give yourself permission to evolve. You don’t have to be beholden to decisions you made an earlier age." So much this. If you are not growing, you are stagnant.

So glad to hear this resonated with you, Janine! It's funny... I almost edited out this phrase and am glad I didn't. Why does modern life make it so easy to backslide?

It's why I am no longer with the man I married when I was 24.

I celebrate you for learning these lessons and making the decisions that hurt so you can be who you are now.

I love this list so much. I too turned 40 this year and my marriage ended.

I’m curious about 14 and 21.

Can you elaborate a touch? Inspired!

Jennifer, thanks for sharing your experience. I can readily relate to your share. My marriage ended the year I was 40 as well. Condolences, or congratulations, whichever applies best today.

Thanks for your curiosity also. As for 14, growing up I was the oldest of five kids so did a lot of babysitting. I haven't had children of my own, but in a way it feels like I already had and raised children. So I'm giving myself permission now to travel and have fun.

For 21, there is really incredible research about how the different phases of a woman's cycle are good for specific activities. For example, when we ovulate, we are more likely to be social, to be eloquent and well-spoken. In the days before we bleed, we are more likely to be detail oriented and tying up loose ends/unfinished business. When we bleed, this is a time to slow down, avoid heavy workouts, etc. In the coming months I'm planning to write more about these cycles. I read a book called In the Flo that is terrific, and Kate Northrup also talks about this in case you would like to go deeper in the meantime! Hope that helps.

32 really resonates Sarah. Lately I’ve found myself beginning to let the emotions out it’s been quite the cathartic journey. But by bit things come into better focus.

So glad that this resonates, Peter. The work that you are doing sounds profound. Especially for men who undoubtedly get the memo somewhere during in life that it isn't manly to have feelings. It is human to feel.

Re: 10–I think about this all the time regarding the medieval peasants who fought back against the rise of the wage-based economy (capitalism) and were slaughtered by the t h o u s a n d s. Like you can’t tell me that didn’t affect the gene pool…

Cara! There is so much wisdom in your words. It's horrifying to imagine the ways that this slaughter came about, and how could it not breed a culture of fear in our very cells? No wonder it doesn't feel safe to be seen.

Number 8. As a make up artist for 10 years I hated better than sex mascara. Whenever people would ask me if it was better than sex with a serious face I would just say No. what really is better than sex? like you said even bad sex is OK and no sex is better than bad sex. You are definitely right if you’re out here saying that something is better than sex you’re clearly not getting fucked right😂

Expand full comment

Right?!! I was gonna say a similar thing, I was also a makeup artist for 15 years and only after I gave it up did I think ‘fuck it’ I’ll finally try that mascara, it was seriously shit - so the people who created it, just imagine the tragic sex they’ve had!

Hahaha, seriously Sarina! Someone else recommended that brand of mascara to me too, recently, so I tried it. I like the shape of the wand. Definitely NOT better than sex.
