Unveiling the Magic of Your Body: A Somatic Guide to Pleasure
Your body knows the way: let it lead you home.
Sex and Style is written by Somatic Sex Coach Sarah Ward. This is intended as general advice. If you’d like a personalized guidance, I’d be honored to connect with you: feel free to book a discovery session.
Hello and welcome to new readers of Sex and Style! It’s a pleasure to see an influx of readers from this post about penis and non-monogamy. I’m glad you’re here and excited to dive deeper to support you to fill in the blanks in your sex-ed.
Intimacy is an incredibly sensitive topic, and I'm committed to creating a safe and inclusive space for you, regardless of your sexual orientation, gender identity, or experience level. So whether you're a seasoned pro or thirsty to learn, you're welcome here.
Let's co-create a safe space for everyone.
Let’s make this a welcoming space. Here’s a few guidelines to support us in engaging:
Be kind. Treat everyone with respect. We’re all on different journeys and this is something to celebrate.
Stay open-minded: Diverse perspectives are welcome. Let’s be respectful, even when we disagree.
Since it's wise to take advice from someone you know, let’s get to know each other! I'm Sarah Ward, a Somatic Sex Coach, devoted to helping you reconnect with your body, desire, and pleasure.
For too long, sex has been that taboo topic that people whisper about. But it's a integral part of a balanced life, and it's time we stopped treating sex like it's dirty. When we don’t talk about sex, we keep the lid on what we’re capable of which can keep us in a loop of having less than satisfactory sex.
Working in the sexuality field, people confide in me their secrets, sexcapades, and even ask for lube recommendations. But it wasn't always this way. I grew up in a super strict conservative religion that taught me my body was the enemy. (Spoiler: it's not.)
Through my journey I’ve learned that the body is an ally, an instrument, the portal to experience profound pleasure. Your body is your very own magic wand!
The VITA™ approach I’m trained in has allowed me and my clients to unwind old stories and surrender to embodied bliss. The body knows the way, sometimes we just need help remembering.
This approach blends tantric and somatic practices. In case you’re unfamiliar with those words (I was, too!), don’t worry — I’ll break it down.
Tantra: The Religion of the Body
Tantra is an ancient practice from medieval India, which focuses on the weaving together of the spiritual and physical realms. Through breathwork, yoga, and visualization, Tantra allows us to experience the divine in our bodies. As my teacher Emily Fletcher puts it: “We’re all god pretending to be human.”
In other words, I’m not here to “fix” you. You are already whole, just as you are. My role is to create a safe container for you to explore and reconnect with the many parts of yourself that make you uniquely you.
Somatic: Embodiment and Healing
Soma literally translates to flesh or body, so somatic healing involves the body. Your body is your own holy text: your personal history is written in your cells and biology.
So when experiences feel too much, too fast and we don’t have time to space to unpack them, they are stored in latency—not unlike throwing dirty clothes in a pile in the closet to deal with later. Pretty soon, all that dirty laundry adds up and spills out of the closet.
Somatic practices like movement, sounding, and releasing are ways to unpack these old stories and free up space for new life. This process is about resourcing — feeling grounded and connected to your body and emotions, which enables you to process and make positive changes.
You may be asking:
Wait, what does that have to do with sex?
Many of us carry limiting beliefs about sex, often rooted in cultural and societal norms. These beliefs can unconsciously sabotage our relationships and sexual experiences.
Note: You may notice that many of these are binary and gendered — since this is part of how many of us were raised. Here, we believe that everyone's sexual experiences are unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to sex. What matters is that sex is consensual, pleasurable, and fulfilling for everyone involved.
Here’s a few common examples of limiting beliefs we may be still holding:
Sex is only for making babies
Men only want you for one thing
If you like sex, that makes you a slut
Certain sexual orientations or practices are unnatural
Embracing your sexual power will make you unsafe and exposed to predators
These old beliefs can lead to shame, guilt, and anxiety, preventing us from fully experiencing pleasure and intimacy. You may have beliefs like this, running in the background like old code.
As a Somatic Sex Coach, I help clients identify and challenge these limiting beliefs, replacing them with empowering and affirming beliefs. By doing so, we can create a more fulfilling and authentic sexual experience.
